Know The Difference Between Eau-De-Toilette And Eau de Parfum

You will come across several kinds of fragrances and Perfume today: perfume remains at the apex, pursued by eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and eau de cologne, each having a smaller degree of aromatic oils, correspondingly. The beauty and strength of perfumes of every variety depends on its fragrance oil content. There are three common varieties of perfume namely Eau de Parfum (EDP), Eau de Toilette (EDT) and Cologne. These perfume names are derived from French words that have found common usage in English. EDP translates to ‘water of perfume, while EDT translates to ‘water of toilet.’ Notwithstanding, these are literal translations and bear only a limited meaning on the actual functions of EDP and EDT.

1. Eau de Parfum
Eau de Parfum (EDP) is a type of perfume which is made from a combination of ethanol and water, with a medium to high concentration of perfumed (ethanol) oil in comparison to the water or alcohol content of the solution. This variety of perfume contains 10% – 20% (typical 15%) fragrance oil. This is the highest composition content of all the three varieties. You will generally find this variety of perfume in upscale lines or stores; and it costs more than the Eau de Toilette and Cologne because of the higher amount of aromatic compound it contains. The EDP also provides a long-lasting fragrance and depending on the dryness of your skin, a few drops of EDP should last from morning until night

2. Eau de Toilette
This is a type of perfume with a medium to low concentration of perfumed (fragrance) oil. EDT contains 5% – 15% (typical 10%) fragrance oil. It generally contains more water than ethanol and is less expensive because it is less concentrated; that also means that it does not last as long. If you love to wear perfume all day, you will probably find that you need to carry bottles of EDT around town because you will need to reapply it often to keep the aroma fresh. This of course, can up the overall cost of using EDT.

3. Cologne
This is a typical chypre citrus type of perfume with 3% to 8% (typical 5%) fragrance oil. It is sometimes used interchangeably with the term EDT. However, the concoction began as the name of a light; fresh fragrance mixed with citrus oils and was made popular by Napoleon. Some perfumers today have a version of this called eau fraiche.

Summary
1. Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette are both types of perfume.
2. EDP has a greater concentration of scent than EDT.
3. EDP lasts longer than EDT.
4. EDP is more expensive than EDT, though, since you have to apply EDT more often, the cost may turn out to be equal.

Buying Perfumes Online

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

Internet has revolutionized marketing in a way that shopping will never be what it used to be- that is, going to the bazaar and picking up items of need; nor is the trip to malls any longer a necessity. People generally go out to a retail store to buy a perfume where they can smell it and opt for the best available one. But Internet shopping outweighed this advantage. A perfume is a personal body product, and everybody has different sensitivity to different fragrances. Thus, what smells divine on your friend might not work the same way for you and vice -versa. Similarly, when planning to buy perfumes as a gift for someone, you would need to be even more careful about your pick.

To be a smart online shopper, read up beforehand articles by fashion vistas on how to select a perfume. All major perfume brands have online catalogs that list and describe their fragrances; it is a good idea to browse through these sites and make a note of those which appeal to you. Some companies also send small samples to potential clients for a small price. Or how about taking a sample whiff of the short listed fragrances at the nearest mall?

Since you will not get a chance to try the fragrance in real, it is best if you make your purchase from reputed online retailers. Large departmental stores too have fragrances listed in their catalog, and buying from them provides another advantage- many stores tend to include free gifts along with the purchase. Online auction sites like eBay and Yahoo can help you get even more attractive deals; however, be wary of people trying to sell off counterfeit or old perfumes. Also, some online retailers have good return policy that allows customers to exchange the fragrance if they do not like the scent.

Buying perfume online can work in your advantage if you buy at the right time. Many online stores offer attractive discounts as part of seasonal sales or holiday specials. Many retailers offer perfume gift sets around this time which is quite cost effective in comparison to buying single perfume. Some retailers also have a ‘buy one get one’ offer; you might get hold of two designer perfumes instead of just one!

As for the shipping, do ensure in advance whether the store charges extra for shipping or it is free, whether the shipping is from a local or offshore site, and the type of packaging of the perfume. The safety of the payment gateway also needs to be ensured. Online stores are great places to find all types of fragrances, ranging from discount ones, exotic scents to designer lines. Depending upon the personal choice and the budget, it is possible to find good deals on the internet.
