Harmful Mobile Radiation?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2015

With the advancement of mobile technology, things are getting more and more streamlined; data transfer is much easier than before and communication has never been so simple. But, is it all for the good? Every good thing has something or the other bad related to it. With mobile phones it’s the radiation emitted by it. But is it really that harmful?

Mobiles along with different other gadgets we use in our day to day life emit electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and we are basically surrounded by it every hour and every moment we breath. The risks of these radiations are enormous and what’s worse, most of us are not aware of it. International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) came up with a report in 2011 that classified mobile phone radiation as carcinogenic which means that there are chances that prolonged exposure to these radiations might eventually lead to cancer. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

A lot of independent studies have been conducted that shows various ill effects of mobile phone radiation. Studies have proved that the electromagnetic radiation might eventually lead to glioma, one of the most common form of brain cancer. Mobile phone radiation is also linked with a type of tumour known as benign acoustic neuromas. The credibility of many of these independent studies cannot be confirmed which leads people to live in denial. However, many of these facts are supported with evidence that come from series of studies conducted back in 2011 under the banner of Interphone Studies conducted or funded by the wireless communication industry.

Mobile phones, during production and distribution, are hardly ever tested in lines of safety and health hazards as most people are unaware of the ill effects of the radiation emitted by them. In 1990, a business man filed a lawsuit allegedly blaming that the death of his wife was because of the radiation emitted by mobile phone. Accordingly a non-profit organization was set up by the mobile phone industry under the name Wireless Technology Research (WTR) headed by Dr. George Carlo. Studies conducted under his guidance reported that mobile phone radiation may cause brain dysfunction and tumour. The study also suggests that there are chances that the electromagnetic radiation can lead to ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), autism and various other psychological disorders.

Mobile phones are one of the must have gadgets in today’s life. Everything we do, in some way or the other, is getting more and more simplified all thanks to the involvement of mobile technology. But considering the ill effects of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by them, we need to be more conscious and take precautionary measures so that the harms are minimised and we have a radiation free tomorrow.
